Show Notes

Our Pastor, Bob Flayhart, joins us for Episode #17 of the Undone Redone podcast, and boy is it a good one! Bob played a huge role in the process of my restoration and is the man God used to begin to help me understand and believe that God loved me in spite of my behavior. It was the constant and steady stream of grace and the Gospel contained in Bob’s messages Sunday after Sunday that finally broke through my unbelief and performance paradigm.

Bob eloquently and in layman’s terms discusses deep theological truths like the relationship of grace and the Law, justification and sanctification, suffering, and the balanced Christian life. Using the metaphor of dance, Bob presents the Gospel as a 3-step waltz of repent, believe, and fight and exposes the dangers of the popular 1-step bunny hops or the Texas 2-step.

Here are a few quotes from this episode:

“I preach to myself every week, because I am a man who desperately needs the Gospel.”

“God’s grace is big enough to cover our failure as parents.”

“The irony about grace is that it does not minimize the law. It is actually legalism that minimizes the law by making the law seem attainable.”

“The law is perfect love for God and others 24/7 every day.”

“The law reveals what love looks like…exposes us…leads us to despair of our own righteousness…in order that we would run to Christ.”

“We sew evangelical fig leaves, hiding behind ministries or that particular area of obedience where we are more disciplined and then focus on that area of the law.”

“If we don’t have the Gospel giving us comfort and security, we will seek that by our own performance.”

“If we aren’t comfortable in the Gospel, we will hide sin from ourselves, God, and others. This is deadly for community.”

“When people are authentic and transparent, it is magnetic.”

“You want to know what you believe about the Gospel? Look to the way you parent.”

“When we live in shame, we are going to look for relief, because the pain of sin is so great.”

“The Gospel is messy.”

“Performance Christianity is self-idolatry.”

“Grace is the only on-ramp to Biblical obedience.”

“Nothing reveals what we believe about grace like suffering.”

“The Gospel is a waltz and the ballroom where it takes place is the Church.”

“Paul didn’t ‘balance’ grace by putting legalism on people.”
